Our Story
Magnum Opus Stoneworks was started by Michal Sarvas in July 2013. In 1982 Michal alongside his father, escaped from a communist dictated Czechoslovakia by way of Austria. They then immigrated to Canada in 1984 and claimed refugee status in Vancouver British Columbia. Before starting Magnum Opus Stoneworks, Michal for the past 18 years worked for European Custom Stone a well reputable family owned and operated stone masonry business.
During 18 years Michal gained a wealth of knowledge and work experience throughout the successful completion of many commercial and residential projects, many of which can be found in the portfolio archives. This invaluable time spent around stonemasonry gave Michal a vision to create an industry leading company which prides itself on leaving clients with timeless captivating and inspiring creations within their projects.
In Latin, the words “Magnum Opus” translate into “Great Work”. The Magnum Opus is an alchemical term for the process of creating the “philosophers’ stone” which in turn is said to have been created by the alchemical method known as The Magnum Opus or “The Great Work”. The Philosophers’ stone is a legendary alchemical substance said to be capable of turning base metals such as lead into gold or silver.
It was also sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. For many centuries, it was the most sought-after goal in alchemy. The symbol of the philosophers’ stone is represented by a circle within which a triangle and a square are found, inside of the square sits another smaller circle touching each four sides of the square.
This was the central symbol of the mystical terminology of alchemy, symbolizing perfection at its finest, enlightenment, and heavenly bliss. All efforts to discover the philosophers’ stone were known at the time as the Magnum Opus “Great Work.” Within our company Magnum Opus Stoneworks artisan masons have a combined 260 years of experience in commercial, and residential projects ranging in small to large scales.
We specialize in all facets of stonemasonry and work with all varieties of natural stones, dimensions, applications and design patterns, any type of flooring “interior or exterior” as well as brick & block-work. We offer a diverse selection of all types of masonry work, from custom fireplaces, barbecues, and water features to outdoor chimneys, columns and facade
All of our stonework is handcrafted using a wide range of timeless techniques and styles by our expert team of experienced masons all of whom have a minimum of 20 years of experience in the trade.
